School Board Appreciation Month
Flour Bluff I.S.D. celebrates School Board Appreciation Month during the month of January each year. In recognition of our wonderful school board members, there will be special presentations for the Board during the regular scheduled meeting on January 31, 2008, at 6:00 p.m. in the board room at the administration office. Prior to the meeting on January 31, a public reception will held at the new Multi-Purpose Field House at 5:15 p.m. Refreshments and a tour of the facility will be provided.


Ribbon-Cutting Ceremony
Flour Bluff I.S.D. Administration and the Board of Trustees will hold a ribbon-cutting ceremony for the new Multi-Purpose Field House, located behind the high school at the back of the baseball/softball complex, on January 31 at 5:15 p.m. in conjunction with the school board appreciation reception. The public is invited to attend.


Youth Advisory Committee Appointment
Congratulations to FBHS University Preparatory student, Antonie Bassett, on her appointment to the City Council's Youth Advisory Committee. Antonie was sworn in along with other students from across Corpus Christi on January 8, at the regular city council meeting.

Hornet Champ Camp
Hornet high school football players recently completed Champ Camp during their regular scheduled athletic class at FBHS. Coach Andrus and his staff worked and drilled the football players for a two-week period with mental and physical obstacle training.


VFW Donates Books to High School
The local VFW chapter has graciously donated five class sets of books to the high school to be used in English classrooms: Warriors Don't Cry and Turn of the Screw. Ron Evans, Commander of the VFW, presented these class sets to English teacher Darcy Sheffler and her colleagues on January 18.

Intermediate Library Receives Grant
The Flour Bluff Intermediate library was awarded a $1,000 grant from the Flour Bluff Wal-Mart on January 22. Lisa McGee, Intermediate librarian, and Elaine Boughton, retired Intermediate employee, began the grant process last year. Nola Lay and Erin Charles, Wal-Mart representatives, were on hand to present the check to the library. Thank you, Wal-Mart for supporting our schools.


FBJH Math Team Sweeps Contest
Congratulations, FBJH Math Team on their recent victory at the Wrenn Middle School Math meet in San Antonio, on January 19, 2008. Fourteen schools attended and FBJH took first place sweepstakes overall. Individual awards were as follows:

7th Grade:

Texas Academic Decathlon Region III Results
The FBHS Academic Decathlon team won third place at the regional meet held at Flour Bluff High School on January 18-19, 2008. They also won third place in the team super quiz and third place in the super quiz relay. Individual results were as follows:

Anthony Pabillano - 1st in Art, 2nd Mathematics, and 4th Overall Honors Individual; Kyle Huskin - 2nd in Essay, 3rd in Science, 3rd in Super Quiz, 3rd in Economics, and 5th Overall Honors Individual; Andrew Acker - 1st in Mathematics and 3rd in Speech; Duncan Guignet - 2nd in Interview, 2nd in Economics, 2nd in Speech, and 3rd in Mathematics; Raine Gregus - 2nd in Economics, 3rd in Essay, 3rd in Music, and 5th Overall Scholastic Individual; Ariel Moore - 2nd in Mathematics, 3rd in Speech, 3rd in Literature, and 5th Overall Varsity Individual; Aaron Alvarez - 3rd in Literature; Justin Webb - 2nd in Economics and 3rd in Mathematics.




FBISD Celebrates Go Red For Women
The Flour Bluff I.S.D. Wellness Program kicks off GO RED FOR WOMEN, a campaign to increase awareness of the risk of heart disease and stroke, on January 28, which will run through February 8. Every employee is invited to join in the celebration by wearing red on Friday, February 1. Several district activities are being planned to raise awareness of the leading cause of death for women - heart disease. The Nutrition department will also be serving heart-healthy foods for students and staff. Samples of activities will include:

1. Blood Pressure Checks during the lunch period at all campus and departments on February 1. All participants will receive a “Go Red” calendar and fact sheet.

2. “Reddest of the Red” - decorate your campus/department RED. A committee will visit all campuses/departments on Friday, February 8 to judge who is “Reddest of the Red.” The winning campus/department will receive a “Red Velvet” cake on Valentine’s day.

3. Brighton Go Red Bracelet Contest - guess how many pieces of red candy are in the jar to win. Contest rules will be posted at each campus/department participating.
