Students at the Early Childhood Center celebrated the "100th Day of School" on Thursday, February 5. Students in Mrs. Floyd's and Mrs. Flores' class collected 100 cans of food for the 100th day of school.

| All-Region Band Competition |
|
Congratulations to FBJH Band members competing at the All-Region Band contest held on January 24, 2009. Members qualifying for All-Region include: Elizabeth Smith, Robert Horrace, Sam Lambiotte, Arielle Williams, Rebecca Martinez, Perry Winkler and Lacey Edwards. Students qualifying for the top band (Symphonic) include: Jasmine Orona, Ian Williams, Christina Gray, Bhreahna Herrera, Steven Kyle, Delayna Graef, So Hee Park, Breanna Poses, Stephaen Gibson, Daniel Uibarri, Lucas Mestas-Nunez, John Austin Gallardo, Jim Tolan, Aaron Clark, Luke Alvarado, Nehemiah Bradish and Gonzalo Romano. The students were directed by David Burnett.

Flour Bluff High School Senior Michael Gowens signed a letter of intent on February 4, to play Division II Football on a four-year scholarship at Texas A&M Kingsville in Kingsville, Texas.
On hand to witness the special event were Michael's fifth grade teachers Ada Anderson, Barbara Espitia and Christian Startz. They reminisced about Michael being the shortest student in the class and the big volcano he made that shot out red paint on fellow student Grace Guthrie's white pants. |

| 2009 Coastal Bend Chess Championships |
| The 2009 Coastal Bend Primary and Elementary Chess Championships were held at Flour Bluff Primary School on January 24, 2009. The Primary/ECC PTA with assistance from the Optimist Coastal Bend Chess Federation sponsored the event. Students from twenty different schools, both public and private, attended the event. Congratulations to Andrew Perez. He is the 2009 Coastal Bend Elementary Champion! Results are posted on the district website on individual campus pages. |

| Decathlon Team Placed 2nd at Regional Competition |
| Congratulations to the FBHS Decathlon Team for winning the Super Quiz Relay and placing second at the regional competition. Super Quiz team members include Anthony Pabillano, Sarah Murphy, Dylan Keyes, Justin Webb, Lillian Reitz, Doug Beard, Christian Mitchell, Andrew Gurley and Raine Gregus.
Individual results were: Anthony Pabillano - 1st in Art, 2nd in Literature, Mathematics, and Essay, 3rd in Music and Economics and 2nd Overall in the Honors Division; Dylan Keyes - 1st in Mathematics; Doug Beard - 1st in Literature; Justin Webb - 1st in Economics, 2nd in Music, 3rd in Super Quiz; Lillian Reitz - 2nd in Literature, Essay, and Interview and 3rd in Speech; Andrew Gurley - 1st in Interview, 2nd in Mathematics, 3rd in Music and 1st Overall in Varsity Division; Raine Gregus - 1st in Essay, 2nd in Art and Social Science, 3rd in Economics and 3rd Overall in Varsity Division; and Christian Mitchell - 2nd in Super Quiz and Economics, 3rd in Literature, Art and Mathematics, and 5th Overall in the Varsity Division. Their sponsors are Beth Huckabee and Barbara Serota.

| FBJH Library hosted young adult author Sonya Sones at a special book signing and reading on February 4. Students were given one of her books provided by a mini grant from the FBJH PTA. Pictured above is 7th grader Gabby Sanchez getting her book signed by Ms. Sones. |

| Congratulations to Cole Dombroski, who was selected as the first recipient of the Matt Beveridge Award by the Coastal Bend Fellowship of Athletes.
Congratulations to Mock Trail Team members Nicole Raney and Ryan Claybourn on winning scholarships at a recent competition. For the fourth year in a row, Nicole received a $1,250 scholarship for 2nd Best Lawyer and Ryan received $225 for 2nd Best Witness.
Congratulations to FBHS sophomore Emily Paulison and FBJH eighth grader Ashley Gayman for placing 1st in the Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR) Essay Contest. Ashley has also been named as the eighth grade state winner. Both girls will be presented awards at the DAR luncheon on March 27.

| The Nueces County Republican Women (NCRW) donated over 400 copies of The Best Dictionary for Students to fourth grade students at Flour Bluff Elementary School on February 4. This was the second year in a row for the group to donate dictionaries to the students of FBISD. |
