HEB Excellence in Education Award
Cliff Strain, Science and Oceans teacher at Flour Bluff Intermediate, was named as a finalist in the HEB Education in Excellence Awards. HEB officials made a surprise visit to Mr. Strain's classroom on March 31, 2009 to award him a check for $1,000 and a check to the Intermediate School in the amount of $1,000 also. Mr. Strain is one of five state finalists in the Lifetime Achievement category. He will receive an all expense paid trip to Austin in May when the winner will be announced.

Junior High School Accolades
Congratulations to the students and staff at Flour Bluff Junior High! During the past several weeks students have been competing in many activities and bringing home top honors to FBJH. Those honors include:
  • 7th & 8th grade tennis teams won 1st place in district.
  • 7th grade girls track team won 1st place in district; 8th grade girls placed 2nd in district.
  • One Act Play won 1st in district and every actor received an acting award.
  • TMSCA team won 1st place at a state qualifying meet in San Antonio and now advances to the state competition.


Education Foundation Big Event
The Flour Bluff I.S.D. Foundation for Educational Excellence, Inc., is planning their annual Big Event for Saturday, April 25, 2009. The event includes Bar-B-Q, dancing, silent and live auctions. All proceeds go toward funding grants for FBISD campuses and teachers. Donations are also being accepted for the silent and live auction. Ticket and table sales can be purchased by calling 694-9219. The Foundation is a 501 (c)(3) non-profit organization.


Hornet Soccer Regional Finalist
Congratulations to the Lady Hornet soccer team for finishing the season as Regional Finalist - Runner Up. Their district record (12-1-1) was very impressive as well as their season record (24-5-2).

Their coach, Mario Lopez, was also voted District Coach of the Year! Congratulations to Coach Lopez and the entire team. GO HORNETS!

High School Accolades
Congratulations to the students and staff at Flour Bluff High School on their many recent accomplishments at area UIL competitions. During the past several weeks students have been competing in many activities and bringing home top honors to FBHS. Those honors include:
  • Skills USA earned 1st place in Computer Programming, Quiz Bowl, Telecommunications Cabling, First Aid/CPR and Community Service Project; one student advanced to state.
  • HOSA students placing at regional and state levels; one student advancing to national competition.
  • UIL District Academic Champions; 1st Place Teams - Speech, Social Studies, Literary Criticism, and Computer Science.
  • UIL Choir Concert & Sight Reading Sweepstakes.
  • Boys golf team won 1st in district and the girls team was 3rd in district.
  • Coach Chris Rogers named Boys Golf Coach of the Year.
  • Best of Show at the Congressional Art Show. (3 years in a row)

Relay for Life, sponsored by the American Cancer Society will be held at Hornet Stadium on Friday, April 17 from 6:00 p.m. - 6:00 a.m. Over 70 teams and 75 cancer survivors have registered to attend. This is a wonderful event that brings the community together to help raise awareness for cancer. ACS will be celebrating 25 years of sponsoring relays. The public is invited to attend.
