FB NJROTC Travels to Daytona Beach for Grand Nationals
The Flour Bluff NJROTC won their 15th consecutive state championship at Texas A&M College Station in March and will travel to Daytona Beach, Florida to compete at the All Services Grand National Championship on May 2-3. The girls have won the Grand Nationals for the past six years and the boys have won the past four years. The team has also won the Navy National Championship for eleven years, ten of them consecutive. GO SEAHORNETS!

Swine Flu Precautions
Flour Bluff I.S.D. is taking extra precautions to help prevent any contamination of the Swine Flu to its students and staff. All teachers, faculty and staff are continually on alert to keep our schools safe and secure.

Information has been posted to the District website about the measures taken and various websites and informational links have been posted both in English and Spanish for parents and community.


HEB Excellence in Education Awards
Teena Jones, UPHSP English teacher, was named as a semi-finalist in the teacher category of the HEB Education in Excellence Awards. Teena received $250 in gift cards from HEB.

Sal Alvarado, Intermediate Principal, was also named as a semi-finalist in the principal category. Sal received $500 in gift cards from HEB.

Flour Bluff Intermediate teacher Cliff Strain, who was a finalist in the lifetime achievement category will travel to Austin in June where the state winners will be announced. Good luck Mr. Strain! Congratulations to Mrs. Jones and Mr. Alvarado.


Ms. Relay Pageant Contestants
Relay for Life
The Flour Bluff/NAS/Padre Island Relay for Life was another huge success raising over $96,000 for cancer. Approximately 65 teams participated on April 17-18 at Hornet Stadium. There were many activities throughout the night including a survivors walk, luminary ceremony, silent auctions, various contests and a Ms. Relay Pageant. Texas Roadhouse provided dinner for approximately 75 cancer survivors. Relay for Life is sponsored by the American Cancer Society.


Art Students Make Showing at Competitions
Four state medals were awarded at the Visual Art Scholastic Event (VASE) in Houston, Texas on April 18. More than 20,400 students participated throughout Texas. Trevor Cook and Anthony Pabillano each won medals and Doug Beard won two medals.

Kathryn Wilkinson received 3rd place and won $100, and Papassara Supthanon received an Honorable Mention for their work in the Sister City Youth Art Competition.

Trevor Cook was recently awarded Best of Show and three plane tickets to Washington, D.C. at the Congressional Art Show in Brownsville for his photograph. His work will be on display beginning June in the Cannon Tunnel at the U.S. Capitol in Washington, D.C. Anthony Pabillano's work is currently on display at the Capitol. This marks the third year in a row that Flour Bluff has won Best of Show.

Education Foundation Big Event
The Flour Bluff I.S.D. Foundation for Educational Excellence, Inc., held their annual "Under the Stars" Big Event on Saturday, April 25 at the Breeze Bluff Ranch in Flour Bluff. Approximately 300 people were in attendance as they danced to the music of Five Card Draw and ate barbecue from Mac's BBQ. A silent and live auction of over 100 items helped raise over $6,000 in donations. The entire evening was very successful raising approximately $29,000 for teacher and campus grants at Flour Bluff I.S.D. Fun contest were also held for best brims, buckles, britches, boots and boot scootin'.


ECC Pre-Registration Dates Set
The Flour Bluff Early Childhood Center will hold a kindergarten pre-registration on May 5-6 from 8:30 a.m. - 2:30 p.m. at the ECC building. An evening registration is scheduled on May 5 from 5-7 p.m. also. Students who are 5 years old as of September 1, 2009 may pre-register.


FBJH Swim Team
FBJH Champions
The 7th & 8th grade swim teams finished first in District and went to the State Invitational Meet where they won six out of nine championship events. The teams combined points made Flour Bluff Junior High the Invitational State Meet Champions. Individual results are posted on the swimming athletic page on the district website.

The FBJH Math and Science teams won 1st in State for the 25th consecutive year at the TMSCA (Texas Math Science Coaches Association) competition. The team won 1st place Team Sweepstakes, Number Sense, Calculator Applications and General Math. They won 5th place in Science. Individual results are posted on the JH page of the district website.

Hornet Spring Tennis finished the season as District Champions and advanced to the Regional Tournament where one student advanced to the State Tournament on May 11-12. Rachel Baldree placed 2nd in women's singles and is headed for State competition. Aidan DeLeon and Stuart Tjon-A-Joe placed 3rd in boys doubles and Courtney Stegall and Greg Buck placed 4th in mixed doubles.

The Lady Hornet Softball team advanced to the playoffs for the first time. Members of the junior high and high school track team also advanced to the Regional track meet. These events have been temporarily put on hold due to the current Swine Flu alert. The UIL has posted information on their website about these events.


FBHS Band and FBJH Band Sweep UIL Contest
The Flour Bluff High School and Junior High School bands, swept the UIL Region XIV Concert & Sight Reading Contest on April 15-16. All six bands received a Superior 1 rating in both Concert and Sight Reading. With the additional Superior 1 rating the marching band received earlier this year, this puts Flour Bluff Band as the Sweepstakes winner this year. Congratulations Hornet Band!
