Miss Deaf Texas Returns to Alma Mater

Katherine Murch, Miss Deaf Texas 2007 and a 2004 FBHS honor graduate, returned to Flour Bluff High School on September 26 as a guest speaker for the American Sign Language students. Over 300 students were in attendance as Miss Murch presented information about her roles and responsibilities as Miss Deaf Texas. She also shared stories about growing up deaf and taking classes at FBHS, Del Mar College and Texas A&M-Corpus Christi. She is a recent graduate of Del Mar College with an associate's degree in business administration.


Choir Students Advance to Region
Several members of the FBHS Choir participated in the TMEA (Texas Music Educator Association) District Choir auditions held at Del Mar College on September 29, 2007. The choir returned with 33 members selected to the District Choir, and 17 advancing to the Region Choir auditions to be held in November, 2007. Results were:

Advancing to Region Choir auditions: Jessica Carlson, Victoria Majors, Abigail Smith, Alexis Spaugh, Leah Breedlove, Nathan Spencer, Angel Abrego, Ray Randolph, Brandon Wilson, Adrian Dancer, Erin Pilcher, Elizabeth Welder, Alicia Black, Angela Gray, Clark Flato, Jacob Hueber, Yong Min Ho, Robert Black and Tucker Sutton.



Interact Club
Katy Kaiser, KIII-TV 3 news reporter, was a guest speaker at the FBHS Interact Club meeting on October 2, 2007. Ms. Kaiser spoke to the group about her experiences as a news reporter and the importance education plays in youth today.

The Interact Club is a Rotary-Sponsored club for high school students. The group meets every first and third Tuesday and Ms. Delmagene Storm is the club sponsor. Students in the club are planning to participate in the Adoption Awareness Picnic on November 3 at West Guth Park, helping with games and face painting.



FBHS National Honor Society
Congratulations go to FBHS National Honor Society nominated by KEDT-TV as outstanding volunteers. They will be formerly recognized at the Star Awards Breakfast hosted by Kathryn Childers on November 15 at the Holiday Inn Emerald Beach. The event is sponsored by the Volunteer Center of the Coastal Bend.



Due to the high water tables in Flour Bluff, crews are busy pumping water
from under the ground to help with the repair of sewer pipes
needed to complete the road construction.
Waldron Road Update
The repair work on Waldron Road is due to be completed by the end of next week, according to city officials. They are hoping to be able to lay asphalt on the west side of Waldron this week-end. Motorists are asked to continue to be patient and drive with extra caution during this time.


Writing Contest Winner
Congratulations to FBHS freshman Josefine Green for placing third in the 2007 UIL Annual Fiction Writing Contest. Josephine entered the contest through her Academy English class and teacher, Mrs. Shirley Thornton, at Flour Bluff Junior High last May.

The UIL and Texas Book Festival sponsor this annual Fiction Writing Contest which is open to all Texas middle and high school students. Josefine's entry, Out of the Shadows, placed third in the 7-8th grade division. She was awarded a $50 scholarship by the corporate sponsor, Herman, Howry & Breen, LLP.



Employee Wellness
The FBISD Employee Wellness program has kicked
off the new school year with over 250 employees participating in the monthly activity rewards program. Beginning this month, employees will start receiving awards for every 25 days of recorded activity. To help promote the kick-off, the Wellness Program provided each campus and department with pink baskets labeled with a big pink ribbon and filled with mints to remind staff that October is Breast Cancer Awareness month. The Wellness program is open to all full-time and part-time permanent employees throughout the year.


DECA Week Celebrated
DECA (Distributive Education Clubs of America) chapters from across the continent will be celebrating DECA Week October 7-13, as they create promotional activities to highlight the best of DECA for non-member students, teachers, parents, administrators and the community.

Flour Bluff High School DECA students, under the sponsorship of Mrs. Liz Worley, will be participating in a fundraiser to help with costs of travel and competitions. The students will be selling peanuts, honey roasted peanuts, and sunflower seeds for $1.00 a bag.  They will be on sale from October 5-19 at the high school.



Homecoming Parade
The Flour Bluff I.S.D. Homecoming Parade is scheduled for Monday, October 29, 2007. The parade will start at 6:00 p.m. at the corner of Compton and Waldron Road and travel south ending at Hornet Stadium. Entry forms are available on the district website or you can pick one up at the Administration office or at the Public Information Office.


Early Release Day
Monday, October 8, is an Early Release Day for all students at Flour Bluff I.S.D. Campuses will take this opportunity to schedule parent conferences in the afternoons. The schedule for campus release is as follows:

ECC/Primary/Elementary @ 11:30am
Intermediate @ 1:00pm
Junior High @ 12:45pm
High School @1:00pm

Buses will be running according to this schedule. Please contact your campus for more information.
