Dr. Carbajal Receives Y Women in Careers Award


At a press conference held January 17 at the YWCA, Dr. Julie Carbajal, Superintendent of Flour Bluff I.S.D., was one of nine women honored as this year's Y Women in Careers. Dr. Carbajal was honored for her leadership in the community and in the profession of education.

The YWCA has recognized 189 women in the past 27 years for their leadership in their career professions. A special ceremony and banquet is scheduled for March 1, 2007, at the Solomon P. Ortiz Center. Other recipients include: Gail Anderson, Patricia Castillo, Diane DeCou, Pat Eldridge, Anna Flores, Dee Hopkins, Tonya Beane Webber and May Kollaja.

FBHS Student Crowned at Livestock Show
Skylar Carden has been selected as this year's Queen at the Nueces County Junior Livestock Show in Robstown. She represented the Flour Bluff/Padre Island 4H Club. In addition to her title, she will also receive a $1,500 scholarship. Many students from FBISD are participating in this year's show. A list of those students and their accomplishments will be forthcoming.

LULAC Selects Educator of the Year
Commander Armando Solis, NJROTC Instructor of FBHS, has been named as LULAC's 2007 Educator of the Year. Commander Solis has been involved with FBHS NJROTC since day one and has helped build the program to where it is today: 10th Consecutive Navy National Championship Team.

An awards dinner is scheduled for February 22, 2007.

FBJHS Students Named to All Region Band
Flour Bluff Junior High Band is proud to announce that 33 students have been named to the All Region Band at the TMEA All Region Band auditions on January 13 at Driscoll Middle School. This is the highest total of any school in the region at the auditions.

Please congratulate the following students on their accomplishments:

Symphonic - Angelica Montano, April Furman, Danielle Corliss, Briana Hottell, Julia Cabral, Daniel Herbert, Eric Cadondon, Stephanie Southard, Stephanie Aguilar, Morgan Moore, Zachary Ramirez, Cameron Baker, Loren Roberts, Emily Gail, David Acker, Matt Durham, Savannah Agnich, Chase Campbell, Rodrigo Avilas, Sarah Beers, John Fabian, Eric Lara and Shelbie Lashua.

Concert - Jessa Guingab, Corina Rodriguez, Collin White, Devon Morrow, Tiffany Ferguson, Naomi Segovia, Ciarra Flores, Virjilo Griggs, Meghan LaNoue, and Ryan Fitzgerald.

1st Alternate - Cassie Mostella and Chris Garcia.

These students will be participating in the January 26-27 TMEA Clinic/Concert at Flour Bluff High School Auditorium. Mr. David Burnett is the Junior High Band Director.



Theatre Arts Students Advance to State UIL
Students from Pam Pailes Theatre Arts class at FBHS will be competing at the State UIL competition May 4-6. The Theatrical Design Entry created by Katy Gonzales, Cari Sassenrath, and Ashley Benson advanced to State UIL finals. The competition involves designs for costumes and set and publicity posters surrounding the play The Trip to Bountiful, by Horton Foote.

School Board Appreciation Month
Flour Bluff I.S.D. will celebrate School Board Appreciation Month at a special reception on Thursday, January 25, from 5 - 6 p.m. in the board room at the administration building. Students from across the district will take part in the celebration by making special presentations to the school board members that night at the regular scheduled meeting at 6 p.m. The public is invited to attend.
