Interact Club News
Congratulations to Claire Ellis and Nicole Raney, FBHS students, recognized as outstanding youth leaders at the 2008 Rotary Youth Leadership Camp held at Zephyr Baptist Encampment on January 25-17. Over 115 high school students from all around south Texas participated in the camp. Claire Ellis was selected as the Most Outstanding young leader in the camp and crowned Miss RYLA 2008. Nicole Raney was recognized as the most creative camper and given the title of Most Creative. Emily Tilton and Jessie Baker attended the camp in 2007 and were asked to return in 2008 as RYLA camp counselors. Congratulations to these young ladies.

Student Achievements
Flour Bluff Junior High
Ciarra Flores won the JH spelling bee and will represent FBJH in the regional spelling bee March 1, 2008 at the Solomon Ortiz Center. Andrea Gerberding was runner-up. Congratulations to both of these accomplished spellers.

Flour Bluff High School
Two FBHS students advance to the DECA state competition to be held in Corpus Christi on February 29-March 1, 2008. Jake Arredondo will compete in Hotel Lodging Management and Peyton Copeland will compete in Quick Service Restaurant Management. Congratulations to both students and their sponsor/teacher Liz Worley.

The FBHS Mock Trial Team competed at the Nueces County Courthouse and placed 2nd. Scholarships were awarded to Nicole Raney (3rd Best Witness $150); William Goodwin (2nd Best Witness $250); Taylor Fanchier (1st Best Witness $350); and Teysha Dougherty (3rd Best Lawyer $725). Teysha Dougherty will be recognized by the Corpus Christi Bar Association on April 9, 2008, as one of the 2008 Mock Trial Best Lawyers.

Hornet Chess Team
Several students traveled to the Region VII chess tournament held in Laredo on February 2. Results were as follows:

Flour Bluff Primary - 1st place team. Individuals - Alex Wallett (1st), Sarah Muir (4th) and Ammarie Wallett (7th).
Flour Bluff Elementary/Intermediate - 3rd place team. Individuals - Natanee Wallett (4th) and Andrew Perez (5th).
High School Championships - Robert Muir tied for 1st place (4.5 of 5 points) and won a $750 scholarship.


Port Aransas UIL Meet

Several FBHS students participated in the Port Aransas UIL Practice Meet on February 2 and placed at the top. Flour Bluff won 1st place team Calculator, Number Sense, and Mathematics and 2nd place in Science. Individual results were:

Anthony Pabillano - 1st place Mathemathics, Calculator and Number Sense; Daniel Proske - 3rd place Mathematics, Calculator, and Number Sense; Dylan Keyes - 1st place Number Sense, Mathematics, and Calculator and 2nd place Science; Emi Kyle - 2nd place Calculator and Number Sense and 6th place Science and Mathematics; Derek Fitzgerald - 3rd place Calculator and Mathematics and 5th place Number Sense; Brandon Earwood - 2nd place Mathematics, 4th place Science and Number Sense, and 5th place Calculator; Ellie Gillum - 3rd place Number Sense, 4th Calculator and Mathematics, and 5th place Science; and Cameron McIntyre - 2nd place in Mathematics.

FBJH Cheerleaders Performance
The FBJH cheerleaders performed at half time for the Islanders basketball game on January 26, 2008. The Performance Squad team consists of 8th graders: Allison Abbott, Courtney Brewer, Madison Worley, Skyler Godsey, Ashlye Perry, Alexa Ornelas and Jessica Nims. The seventh graders are: Sammi Billman, Ashlee Hromadka, Kaitlynn McNew, Carleen Merchant, Stephanie Mundahl, Jasmine Orona, Lauren Page, Kylie Petty, Kristin Polansky, Kaitlin Rock, Logan Ross and Caitlyn Voris. Coaches are Alicia Divelbiss and Kim Moore.

2008 Challenge Team
The FBHS Challenge team match against Ingleside will be broadcast on KEDT-TV on Monday, February 11 at 7:00 p.m. and be repeated Saturday, February 16 at 6:30 p.m. The semi-final match against Carroll High School will be taped on Wednesday, February 13. Good Luck Hornets!
