FBISD Named as Finalist - HEB Excellence in Education Award
Superintendent Dr. Julie Carbajal has been contacted by officials from HEB that Flour Bluff ISD has been named as one of five school districts in the state as a finalist for the Excellence in Education Award. Along with this first recognition is a $5,000 check for the school district. Officials from HEB will visit the district on May 12 as part of the selection process to help determine the overall state winner. The winning school district will be presented a cash award of $100,000 at a special reception in their honor at the Enchanted Springs Ranch in San Antonio in June.


FBHS Student Wins 1st Place in Animation Contest
Aaron Kimmel won first place in the Animation Contest sponsored by the Texas Computer Education Association 2006 Student Technology Contest for the 9-12 grade level. The name of the entry was "Ambition" and the sponsor is Connie Vallie. According to TCEA officials there were over 800 entries totaling over 1400 Texas students. Congratulations Aaron and Ms. Vallie.


Intermediate Teachers to Attend NASA Camp
Flour Bluff Intermediate teachers Lori Veteto and Olivia Trevino were selected as two of 80 Texas middle school teachers to take a seat at NASA Johnson Space Center in Houston this summer to learn new ways to incorporate the wonder of space into their classrooms. As part of Middle School Aerospace Scholars (MAS), the teachers were chosen to participate in one of three one-week summer sessions at JSC during June and July. The program gives the educators access to JSC education specialists, flight directors, scientists and engineers who will talk about the latest technology being used in the space program.


JH Science Olympiad
Flour Bluff Junior High participated for the first time this past week-end in the Science Olympiad State Tournament at Texas A&M College Station. Fourteen students participated in 23 events. Kylie Osborn and Destini Garcia placed 1st in the lab events with their entry "Disease Detectives". Placing in the engineering events were Kylie Osborne, Nick Beseda, Cassie Morales - 10th place "Mission Possible"; Maegan Wagoner and Kylie Osborne - 7th place "Storm the Castle"; and Rory Beck and Maegan Wagoner - 6th place "Wheeled Vehicle". Members of the history making team also included: Logan Beseda, Caree Carlson, Brooke Gaddie, Marissa Alvarado, Bonnie Leal, Jennie McGee, Crystal Peet, Michelle Tiongson and Sarah Seaquist Olympiad sponsor is Brenda Killen.


FBISD School Board Elections
Flour Bluff I.S.D. will hold elections for Places 4 & 5 of the Board of Trustees on May 13, 2006. Early voting begins May 1 and ends May 9 from 8:00 - 5:00. Residents in Flour Bluff may vote at the FBISD Maintenance/Transportation Building. Padre Island residents may vote at Island Presbyterian Church.


"Do the Write Thing"
Flour Bluff Junior High students were named winners in an essay contest sponsored by the National Campaign to Stop Violence. Andy Walker was named the male National Finalist and his family will receive an all-expense paid trip to Washington, D.C. this summer. The FBJH finalist were: 1st place - Julia Allen and Andy Walker; 2nd place - Amy Brauchle and Taylor Howard; and 3rd place - Shelbie Lashua and Alexander Gurley. Congratulations to these outstanding students.
