Southside Kiwanis Recognitions
The Southside Kiwanis Club recognized two special Flour Bluff ISD persons on Tuesday, September 26, at Del Mar's Harvin Center. Superintendent Dr. Julie Carbajal was in attendance to help celebrate.

School Trustee Frank Brogan was recognized as the Kiwanis Citizen of the Year. Mr. Brogan has been very involved in the community and a long time member of the Kiwanis. He was recognized for his efforts as a model citizen of the community.

Primary school assistant principal Chris Stanley was recognized as Kiwanian of the Year. Chris chairs the children's committee and has a very active group of 144 students in the STAR Club at the Primary School.



Commended Students Named
Congratulations to Gus Hernandez and Kevin Caceres of Flour Bluff High School for being named 2007 National Merit Commended Students. Each student received a Letter of Commendation from the National Merit Scholarship Corporation (NMSC), which conducts the program.


TSPS TrigStar Awards
Anthony Pabillano a sophomore at FBHS has been determined the runner-up of the TSPS TrigStar competition. Anthony was a 9th grader when he took the TrigStar test and made a perfect score. He tied with another student for a perfect score, but the winner was determined by the fastest time. Anthony's time was 30 minutes. His teacher, Mrs. Theresa Mader was also recognized for her teaching excellence and received a $500 cash award. Mrs. Mader was Anthony's Pre-AP Algebra II teacher last year. Both attended a special Scholarship Dinner at Texas A&M-Corpus Christi and will attend an awards dinner gala in the Woodlands in October.


Musical Production of Annie Begins
The cast and crew for the musical Annie started rehearsals this week. This will be a joint effort by the FBHS Theater Arts and Choir departments. A grant was received from the Flour Bluff ISD Foundation for Educational Excellence to help produce this musical conducted by Pam Pailes and Fernando Fernandez. The musical has performances set for December 1 & 2 and 8 & 9 at 7:00 p.m. and December 3 & 10 at 3:00 p.m. Tickets will be $7 for adults and $5 for students and children. Hornets Swarm at Chess Tournament
Students from across the district attended the Calallen Chess Tournament recently and walked away with many medals and trophies. Results were:

Grade K-1 Novice 1st place team trophy: Brendan Suckley (7th), Kristin Johnson (1st) and Ammarie Wallet (3rd).
Grade 2-3 Novice 1st place team trophy: Kara Johnson (2nd), John Hodges (medal), Andrew Perez (9th), Aaron Frahm (11th), Richard Blankenship (7th), Mary Blankenship (14th), Riley Landon (4th), Ryan Breen (1st), Sarah Muir (6th), Allison Burnett (3rd), and Jonas Gallegos (5th).
Grade 4-5 Novice 4th place team: Joshua Rider (medal), Michael Van Tassel (7th) and Christian Max Castaneda (5th).
Primary (grade K-3 higher than Novice) 2nd place team trophy: Natanee Wallett (5th), Alex Wallett (11th) and Andrew Burnett (6th). Elementary (grade 4-5 higher than Novice) 6th place team trophy: Joshua Rasche (18th). Middle School grade 6-8 3rd place team trophy: Robert Muir (1st) and Casey Hurt. High School grade 9-12 6th place team tied for 4th: Kaitlin McClymont (8th).
