High School Robotics Team Wins Regional Competition


Flour Bluff High School Skills USA Robotics Team won first place overall at the BEST (Boosting Engineering Science & Technology) Regional competition at Texas A&M Kingsville on October 28, 2006. The team placed first overall (BEST Award), first in BEST website, first in most photogenic design and second placed in tournament.

Each member of the team was awarded a $1,000 scholarship and acceptance into the A&M Kingsville Engineering program for a total of over $23,000 in scholarships. The team beat out 14 other schools and will advance to the State Championship in Lubbock at the end of November. Team members include: Marshall Tavares, Drew Altenburg, Cynthia Broadstreet, John Duve, Ashley Walch, Vincent Cruz, Anthony Cruz, Kyle Kalinec, Cassie Scott, Aaron Sanford, David Melin, Lyle Green, Michael Kramer, Rick Cruz, Rylee Stewart, Dustin Brandewie, Jared Ketner, Joey Cunha, Alex Cunha, David Resendez, Robert Miller, Nicole Lopez and sponsor Kenneth Stewart.



FBISD Wellness Walk-Run
The Flour Bluff ISD Wellness Program will be hosting their semi-
annual walk-run on Saturday, November 11. Since the event falls on Veterans' Day, a commemorative T-shirt was made for this special day. All those who participate will receive the commemorative T-shirt. The walk-run starts at 8 a.m. at Hornet Stadium. Employees and their spouses can register for this 3.5 mile run or 2.5 mile walk at their campuses through their Wellness Coordinators. Trophies will be awarded for 1st - 3rd places in both the walk and run. Special drawings and door prizes will be held also.


Harte Library Presents Holiday Forest
The Janet F. Harte Library is once again sponsoring the Holiday Forest from November 20, 2006, through January 3, 2007. School classrooms and groups and non-profit organizations are encouraged to participate by putting up a decorated tree of their choice. The tree guidelines are simple: all trees should be artificial; no electrical lighting; no glass breakable ornaments and no religious symbols allowed. FBHS UIL Teams Win Competition
The FBHS UIL Teams were victorious as they participated in their first practice meet held at Incarnate Word Academy on October 28. They won first place in Number Sense, Calculator, Mathematics and Science. The teams have been practicing hard and are ready for the 2006 UIL competitions to start. Team members are: Andrew Acker, Bryan Spears, Nathan Rubey, Dylan Keyes, Derek Fitzgerald, Anthony Pabillano, Daniel Proske, Emi Kyle, Ellie Gillum, and Matt Carter.


KEDT Challenge
The Flour Bluff High School Academic Challenge Team will compete in the first series of the KEDT Challenge competition on November 9 against Calallen High School. The competitions are taped at the KEDT studio with a select audience and then broadcast in January. The competition works along the lines of the game show Jeopardy. Students are asked questions and then buzz in to answer and score points. Team members are Katy Gonzales, Lisa Lawson, Thomas Cronnon, Jake Alexander, Lisa Lawson and Andrew Acker. Sponsors are Beth Huckabee and David Rubac. Good luck to the team!


Food Handlers' Class Scheduled
The Food & Nutrition Department will hold a food handler's permit class on November 7 from 4-6 p.m. in the Board Room at Central Office. Cost of the class is $10, and cash is required. The class is open to all employees, students and parents. Call 694-9220 for more information.


Special Olympics Bowling
Special Olympics will host a bowling competition on Saturday, November 4, at Saratoga Lanes starting at 8:00 a.m. If you are interested in volunteering to help, you may call the Special Education office at 694-9247, or just show up and they will put you to work. This is a great competition, and FBISD will have several teams of students participating
