The Flour Bluff MATHCOUNTS team placed 1st at the Regional competition held at Texas A&M - Corpus Christi on February 5. This was the 19th straight year the Flour Bluff teams have won this competition. Thirteen schools from the area competed for advancement to the state competition on March 19 in Austin. The two teams advancing are 1st place Flour Bluff Junior High (team members Matt Junttila, Anthony Pabillano, Raphael-Joel Lim and Dylan Keyes) and 2nd place IWA. Also advancing to state in individual competition are Daniel Proske, 4th place individual and Nathan Rubey, 6th place individual who qualified as at-large participants.
Out of the top ten individual placements, eight were Flour Bluff students. The individual results were as follows: 1st place Raphael-Joel Lim, 2nd place Anthony Pabillano, 3rd place Matt Junttila, 4th place Daniel Proske, 5th place Dylan Keyes, 6th place Nathan Rubey, 7th place Bryan Spears, and 8th place Austin Smith. Raphael-Joel Lim placed 1st in a separate event called the “Countdown Round” and Matt Junttila placed 2nd in the event as well. The students are coached by Flour Bluff Junior High teacher Joe Hay.
