PERCEPTION
The student is introduced to the Orff instruments available in the classroom, and will play them throughout the semester. The student is taught how to read music in the treble and bass cleff. Terms are used on an ongoing basis to explain sound, music and performances.
CREATIVE EXPRESSION/PERFORMANCE
The students perform independently with accurate intonation, rhythm, and performance techniques. The student will perform expressively, from memory and notation, a varied repertoire of music representing styles from diverse cultures. The student will demonstrate appropriate audience etiquette while their classmates are performing. The student will demonstrate appropriate small and large ensemble performance techniques during formal and informal concerts. The student will read standard notation. The student will use standard symbols to notate meter, rhythm, and pitch in simple patterns. The student will read and write music that incorporates rhythmic patterns in various meters. The student will identify music symbols while singing, playing instruments, and playing the classroom game MUSIC BINGO. The student will create a homemade drum. The student will create rhythmic and melodic phrases. The student will create/arrange simple accompaniments.
HISTORICAL & CULTURAL HERITAGE
The student will identify aurally-presented excerpts of music representing diverse genres, styles, periods, and cultures. We study several composers in depth. (Bach, Beethoven, Leonard Bernstein, Aaron Copland-just to name a few.) The student will describe various music vocations, and avocations. Musicians are sometimes brought into the classroom to share their job experiences. (One such volunteer included Hector Garza, jazz saxophone player, and volunteer at Flour Bluff Intermediate School.) The student will perform music and movement from diverse cultures. The student will perform music representative of American and Texas heritage. The student will identify concepts taught in other fine arts and their relationships to music concepts.
