Commander Armando Solis

CDR Armando Solis has been the Senior Naval Science Instructor at Flour Bluff High School since the program's inception in June 1993.

Commander Solis was born and raised in Brownsville, Texas.  He attended parochial schools in Brownsville, and graduated as valedictorian from St. Joseph's Academy in Brownsville, Texas.  He attended and graduated from St. Edward’s University in Austin, Texas in 1971 with a Bachelor of Science Degree Magna Cum Laude in Mathematics.  Upon graduation from college, he was commissioned as an Ensign in the United States Navy and commenced a military career that spanned more than 22 years.  During that career, Commander Solis was a submariner in the nuclear navy, was a government contracting officer, was a professional logistician specializing in aviation logistics.

Commander Solis was selected by the Navy to attend postgraduate school at the Naval Postgraduate School in Monterey , CA , and was awarded a Master’s Degree with Distinction in Operations Research/Systems Analysis.  Following a two year sea duty assignment in San Diego, CA , Commander Solis was appointed by the Navy to teach Operations Research and Computer Information Systems at the Naval Postgraduate School for a period of three years.

Upon his retirement from the Navy in 1993, Commander Solis was selected as the inaugural Senior Naval Science Instructor at Flour Bluff High School , and was tasked to commence the start-up of the unit in June of 1993.  From day one the program exceeded all expectations.  It was selected as the best new program in 1993, and has been recognized as a Distinguished Unit every year since 1994.  The Flour Bluff High School unit has been a Texas State Champion 17 times, has been a Navy National Champion 11 times, has been a Navy National Academic Champion 5 times, and has been an All-Service National High School Drill Team Champion 9 times.  The Navy League has recognized the NJROTC Unit at Flour Bluff as the Best Unit in Texas and as the Best Unit in the Nation.

CSC (sw) Bruce Chaney

Chief Chaney has been a Naval Science Instructor (NSI) since September 2009. Before becoming an instructor he worked at the Omni Hotel as a purchasing agent for the various food venues operated by the hotel. Before working at the Omni he worked for HEB as a Night Stock Control Manager. Chief Chaney was born in Hartford, CT and was raised in a military family. He currently teaches Naval Science 1 at the Junior High and is the coach for the junior high teams as well as the Junior Varsity Armed and Unarmed teams at the high school.

Upon graduating from high school, Chief Chaney attended college for a short period of time. He moved on to a different path and eventually joined the Navy in May, 1985. After completing boot camp and Mess Management "A" school, (cooking school) Chief Chaney was assigned to the USS Arthur W. Radford, a destroyer, for his first command as a ship's cook. He transferred from there to the Naval Submarine Base, Groton, Connecticut for three years, working in the Bachelor Housing Department. During his time there he held a large number of duties including coordinating military funerals for the state of Connecticut.

After transferring from the naval submarine base, he was assigned to NMCB 74, a Naval Mobile Construction Battalion (the Sea Bee's). There he spent four and a half years learning combat tactics, weapons handling and field survival. During this tour he was promoted to the rank of Chief Petty Officer. Next he transferred to Naval Technical Training Center (NTTC) at Lackland Air force Base, San Antonio. There he was an instructor and curriculum developer for the combined Navy/Air force basic cooking school. There he developed the course that is still being used to teach new chefs in the Navy. Upon completion of this tour he transferred to the aircraft carrier, USS Abraham Lincoln (CVN 72). While on the Lincoln, Chief Chaney supervised over 130 sailors in the production of 5000 meals daily. Additionally, he managed 12 storerooms with a worth of 2.5 million dollars in supplies. In 2003 he transferred to the Mine Warfare Training Center, Ingleside Texas. He was the training liaison for the Navy, supervising the various courses of instructions that were contracted to local business. He retired from active duty on 1 May, 2006.
